Christmas Drinks - 17th November 2011 - The IOD, London SW1.

Thanks to everybody that came to the London Drinks - It was great to see you...

Thank for attending - Intercultural Communication; from theory to practice and back – Bristol,

We heard from Celia Roberts of King’s College London about moving the cultural debate on from country cultures and ethnic groups to interpersonal and group interactions being influenced by institutional rules of engagement. Her talk was set against a background of job interviews and the analysis of interactions between diverse people.

Celia highlighted the false assumptions around assumed common understandings and the programmed patterns of response and expectation produced by our own education, group affiliations and past interactions.

Carlos Gonzalez-Carrasco from The Transcultural Business Group engaged the audience with food and cooking metaphors to illustrate the origins of a current world view and pointed at ego, superiority, confirming bias and power as limited factors in operating well in diverse situations. He took the audience on a journey from white Western centric English speaking dimensional intercultural theory to a global view of mind, body and spirit, transcending our conditioning to be present to possibility, dancing in the moment and becoming a “heart leader.”

After lunch, Fancesca Bargiela-Chiappini from the University of Warwick, explored the study of culture itself and clustered the 25 western theories into categories that included culture as an “obstacle to be overcome”, “cultural comparisons”, “paradigm shift” and “looking for the origins.”

Her conclusion was that we are condemned to the complexity of culture but that our salvation may lie in decentering ICC from the Western perspective and studying the subtleties of interpersonal communication in a more self-reflexive manner.

George Simons from Diversophy brought the streams and themes together using historical references to various cultural movers and shakers and the cruel truth that the origins of intercultural management where in building and controlling empires.

Using recent books that he had been asked to read and review by Peter Franklin, George took us on a journey looking at questions and perspectives and trying to identify the essence or “Urculture” in our field.

He unified the day with a statement essential saying that authenticity and identity were produced by everyone and that they were a response to group dynamics.

He stated that the aim of the study of culture was to produce a repertoire of behaviours and communications that equip us to more fruitfully deal with the complexity of our super-diverse world.

The day ended with a round table discussion responding to audience questions.

The SIETAR UK day was organised by UWE volunteers with the essential work of Linsey Mickles and Helen Watts. The whole event was spearheaded with great success by SIETAR UK committee member, Jo Angouri, from the University or the West of England in Bristol.

SIETAR UK extends its deep gratitude to the speakers and UWE helpers for all the planning, effort and attention to detail that made the day a high quality learning experience, an excellent networking platform and a genuine intellectual treat.

Intercultural Conflict Day Course 25th June 2011, London, UK

Intercultural Mediation is used when a conflict is determined or influenced by cultural differences and when its resolution takes these cultural differences into consideration.

It is important that the mediator is aware of the cultural differences of the conflict parties. Even if the cultural differences may not be the actual/original source of a dispute. We will demonstrate that these cultural differences might play a crucial and decisive role in the mediation and conflict management process and its outcome. We consider intercultural mediation as a means of constructive conflict management.

In this powerful workshop you will learn and practice facing, facilitating and resolving conflicts.

You will learn more about your own conflict style, your emotional triggers and how to use your resources effectively when being in a conflict situation. You will develop strategies for being a facilitator and learn how to use mediation to get to a win-win outcome, particularly in an intercultural context.

You will go from theory to practice, from conflict to resolution, from ethno-centricity to ethno-relativity; you will experience and receive input about the powerful tool of Mediation as a means for constructive conflict resolution.

Who should attend? – This course is designed for trainers, coaches and academics studying Intercultural topics.
