Christmas Drinks - Thanks

Written by Administrator

SIETAR UK would like to thank everyone who attended the;

2009 Christmas Drinks,

at The Institute of Directors - IOD,

Although inclement weather, illness and a vast number of clashing engagements reduced the attendance, those who did venture out contributed to a warm and rewarding evening with a healthy smattering of new people, friends from the Association for Coaching and some special guests.

Thanks to Barbara StClaire Ostwald, Communicaid and Katherine Tulpa for supplying raffle prizes and for all those who volunteered their services to help SIETAR UK grow and prosper in 2010.

Autumn Conference 2007

SIETAR UK Autumn Conference 2007
With the cooperation of Birkbeck College, University of London

"Evaluating and Developing Intercultural Competence"

Date: Saturday 3rd November 2007, 10am - 4pm
Venue: Birkbeck College, University of London

Come and join us for a day of presentation and debate around the topic of intercultural competence. Do we all share the same definition of intercultural competence? In what ways can it be evaluated? And what is the best approach to developing intercultural awareness and skills in our students and trainees?

In association with Birkbeck College, University of London, we will be presenting a varied programme of presentations and workshops by eminent and established experts in the fields of intercultural communication training, language education and cultural research. The programme includes the following sessions:

  • The challenges of assessing intercultural competence, a presentation by Dr Mike Byram, Professor of Education at Durham University and Programme Adviser to the Council of Europe Language Policy Division, followed by a workshop presenting the ‘Autobiography of Intercultural Encounters’.
  • A critical cosmopolitan approach to developing cultural awareness in an unequal world, a presentation by Dr Adrian Holliday, Professor of Applied Linguistics at Canterbury Christ Church University College, author of Intercultural Communication: an Advanced Resource Book.
  • Using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator in Intercultural Contexts, a presentation and practical demonstration by Alan Cornes, international trainer, development consultant and coach, author of Culture from the Inside Out.
  • CISV and developing intercultural skills in the not-for-profit sector, a forum on collaboration between interculturalists and not-for-profit and humanitarian organisations.

    Registration opens at 9.30 am at the main entrance to Birkbeck College on Torrington Square, Bloomsbury, London. Presentations will run from 10 to 4 and will conclude with a Panel Discussion on the topic of intercultural competence. Tickets cost £26 for full members and £13 for full-time students, with a hot buffet lunch included. You must register at least one week before the event. We also ask all newcomers to sign up to become a member of SIETAR UK, which will give you access to SIETAR resources and reduced price admission to future events.
